When the owners of a small family farm in rural Northern Texas decided that solar power alone would not be enough to meet their objectives of optimizing energy savings, ensuring relief during power outages, and mitigating the threat of fire devastation during the region’s hot, dry summers, they turned to Zanbur Energy to supplement their existing solar system. The five-acre farm is a haven for the two parents, three small children, the family dog, and the collection of chickens, guinea hens, donkey, horses, and other animals that live there. Farming is a family business. While the father works full-time in nuclear medicine, the wife teaches horseback riding, and the kids pitch in to help with chores, learning to be responsible and independent by caring for the farm animals.
The possibility of power outages, heat-induced fires, and severe winds is common in the region throughout the summer. At any time, the family could lose electricity and, even with a backup generator, find themselves in the grip of triple-digit July temperatures. Solution
The Zanbur Energy team created a solution that would work with the homeowner’s current 10 kW solar installation. Zanbur Energy Home Power (FHP) solution is comprised of two core integrated components that are designed to meet the energy management and battery backup needs of the entire home: the Control Box, an industry-leading, intelligent panel that can control energy from grid, solar, battery, or generator, and the Module X, a super-robust, high-capacity AC-coupled battery. To suit the farm’s needs, the team built two 13.6 kWh Module X batteries, for a total of 27.2 kWh of storage capacity. When there is a power outage, the FHP automatically changes to backup battery power in less than 16ms, protecting electrical equipment and delivering uninterrupted power to the home.
The FHP’s Smart Circuits are a unique differentiator, allowing homeowners to optimize energy consumption by managing and monitoring consumption of three circuits on-demand, based on their priorities and needs – all from the comfort of the Zanbur Energy app. The homeowners chose air conditioning, a well water pump, and a generator in this case. Homeowners can turn on, off, or re-balance load usage in real time, such as activating the AC for a few minutes during an outage and then switching over to the generator to keep the refrigerator cold. If the battery’s level of charge falls below a certain threshold, the Control Box X will only power the specialized circuits designated.
The homeowner uses the Zanbur Energy system not only to control their own energy demands, but also to aid their neighbors by managing their own usage to support the grid during peak demand periods. Zanbur Energy installed and commissioned the system in less than a day. The FHP is AC linked, which means that, unlike DC coupled batteries, it works in tandem with the homeowner’s existing smart panel, solar system, and generator. Customer assistance has been excellent both during and after installation.
The battery is ready to use right out of the box; simply open and hang it. The average installation time is 30 minutes. There is no programming. The smart control is 90% plug and play, requiring no additional programming. The dedicated circuits were simply connected by the installation. There are no complicated wiring or compatibility difficulties. Zanbur Energy AC architecture avoids the need for complicated DC wiring, making it simple to meet the homeowner’s request to relocate the battery away from the main panel.
